Mark Schreiner has been the producer and reporter for "University Beat" on WUSF 89.7 FM since 2001 and on WUSF TV since 2007.

He has worked as an anchor, reporter and producer at radio stations in Tampa and his native Chicago since 1992.

The University of South Florida football team had one of its most eventful weekends in recent times, first with Saturday's announcement that head coach Willie Taggart's contract will be extended and the Bulls accepting an invitation to the Miami Beach Bowl on Sunday.

The University of South Florida now ranks 25th among the country's public research universities for research spending, up two spots from a year ago.

The rankings, which were put together by the National Science Foundation, also puts USF at 41st in the nation among the 895 public and private research universities surveyed. That's up two spots from 43rd, a ranking the school held the previous two years.

A University of South Florida football player has been arrested and suspended from the team for allegedly  shooting the exterior of a campus residence hall early Sunday morning.

University Police released a statement saying that Benjamin Knox, 21, of DeLand, allegedly fired a number of gunshots that hit Holly D residence hall on the Tampa campus about 4 a.m. Sunday.

No one was injured in the shooting, and the dormitory sustained some damage.

Tampa Police announced that a 23-year-old man is being charged in an incident that left former

University of South Florida football player Elkino Watson dead and current USF student Desmond Horne injured. 

Randolph Graham, 23, turned himself in at Tampa Police headquarters Wednesday night. Graham, who was joined by his lawyer, will be charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and attempted murder with a weapon, police said.
