Earthquake Off Cuba Coast Felt In Key West

A 5.0 earthquake off the coast of Cuba Thursday afternoon was felt in parts of Florida. No one has reported damage or injuries at this point, although, according to the Associated Press the quake swayed medium size buildings in Havana. The earthquake was centered 110 miles Southeast of Key West where some residents also say they felt the earthquake. Artist Pam Hobbs was on the second floor of a historic wood building.

"The building was slightly swaying and kind of pulsating and I felt like kind of dizzy but realized this wasn't the wind", described Hobbs. "By that point it was done and I stepped out onto the hallway and everybody else on the second floor also stepped out on the hallway and said, did you feel that?"

John Bellini, with the US Geological Survey, said, "This is quite an unusual place to have an earthquake. I don't recall seeing one there in my career. But you know, odd ones do happen occasionally from time to time. A few years back there was a magnitude 5.8 in the middle of the gulf of Mexico that was felt all over Florida and Georgia and Alabama."

The National Weather Service in Key West has said there is no tsunami warning.
