Florida's Department of Health has confirmed two cases of measles in two unvaccinated adults in Indian River County.
Officials said Sunday that both patients live in the same household. One acquired measles internationally, and the second acquired the case at home on central Florida's Atlantic coast.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. It can spread through the air, and the virus can survive up to two hours on surfaces or in a room where an infected person was coughing or sneezing. Symptoms including a rash, fever and coughing generally begin roughly seven to 14 days after a person is exposed to someone with measles.
Indian River County Health Department Administrator Miranda Hawker urges all residents and visitors who have not been immunized to get vaccinated.
