Fl House Bill Bars Local Govs From Making Vacation Rental Rules

A bill moving through the Florida House would preempt local governments from passing ordinances pertaining specifically to vacation rentals. Rep. Mike La Rosa (R-St. Cloud) says local governments are passing rules so stringent some people may be forced to stop renting their homes.

“I’ve found fines to upwards of $20,000 for one violation, the first violation. It goes up to $100,000—a fine, which then allows the local government to then lien the property. Who knows what would happen at that point,” La Rosa says.

La Rosa says local rules should be evenly applied. For example, he says if local governments wants to make rules about noise level or parking they should apply that rule to all homes, not just vacation rentals.
