Florida Blue Cancels 300,000 Policies

Around the country, a lot of people who buy their own health coverage are getting letters from their insurance company, saying they have to change plans. A lot of those letters are going to Floridians.

Florida Blue is canceling the policies of three hundred thousand people in the state. That's 80% of the policies it sells in the individual market. It's because the plans don't cover all of the benefits that will be required on Jan. 1 under the Affordable Care Act.

The customers who have to change policies can shop on the Health Insurance Marketplace as soon as the bugs are fixed. Florida Blue has a lot of plans on the exchange. Some customers will pay less, some more. It depends on their income, age, family size, and county. And, of course, whether they smoke.
