Gov. Rick Scott stopped by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers Friday. He announced new proposals aimed at making college more affordable.
One of Scott’s proposals is to eliminate a sales tax on college textbooks.
He announced this plan at FGCU’s student bookstore.
Scott said removing the tax would save students money.
“If you are taking five courses a semester, over a year you will save --by getting rid of the sales tax on textbooks – each student will save $170 a year,” he said.
Scott also announced an effort to expand the Bright Futures Scholarship program.
He said right now the program doesn’t include summer school.
But, Scott said his newly proposed budget would change that.
