Gov. Scott says I-75 Connect to RSW Will Be Open By Early March

Gov. Rick Scott was in Fort Myers Wednesday to make an announcement about transportation at the Southwest Florida International Airport.

The governor had good news for commuters going in and out of the airport.

Joined by the recently appointed Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jim Boxold, the governor said the I-75 direct connect to the airport will be open by early March.

The direct connect is meant to alleviate congestion around the airport.

The governor said projects around the state like the connector are needed as more people come to Florida.

“About 300,000 people moved here last year. Record tourism; 97.3 million tourists came to Florida last year, I think,” Scott said. “This year, we’ll have record tourism again, that’s the fourth year in a row. Record tourism. You look at all the people coming down here buying second homes. Everybody just loves to be in Florida, especially this part of Florida.”

The project cost $54 million. Construction began in 2012.
