Green Chemistry

University of Alabama
Dr. Robin Rogers

We sit down with Dr. Robin D. Rogers, he's Research Professor at University of Alabama, adjunct professor at McGill University in Montreal, and President, Owner and Founder of 525 Solutions. Dr. Rogers recently presented a lecture as part of the FGCU College of Arts and Sciences' Lecture Series, called "Can Renewable Resources Replace Plastics in a Sustainable Society?"

We explore 'green chemistry' and a technique he has developed to make plastics using natural materials. He's extracting biopolymers from shrimp shells and turning them into things like films, fibers and beads that can be used just like chemically-produced plastic products. His ultimate goal is to replace all plastics with biopolymer plastics made from natural materials.
