Lee County Emergency Operations Center Prepares For Tropical Storm Erika

Topher Forhecz/WGCU

Tropical Storm Erika has local emergency operation centers getting ready.

Rob Farmer stood in front of a multi-paneled screen at the Lee County Emergency Operations Center in Fort Myers. One of the screens showed the outline and projected path of Tropical Storm Erika.

Farmer is the county’s Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management. The storm has the center in what Farmer called a “monitoring phase.”

Farmer said they’re ready for Erika.

“We have information going out to agency partners and those are all the people that would staff the EOC. [We want] just to make sure that they’re all on the ready. And then each day - Saturday and Sunday - we will be meeting internally to decide at what point based on its trajectory do we need to activate or not,” he said.

Lee County has three levels of activation. Level two brings in county partners to address needs like possibly opening up a shelter. Level one is full activation.

Farmer said at that point the county will basically operate out of the facility.
