Maybelle Stamper

News-Press Archives

Artist Maybelle Stamper is among the cast of colorful characters that make up Southwest Florida’s history. Stamper was something of a loner, making Captiva Island the perfect place to set down roots in the 1940s. The surreal quality of her lithographs and watercolors have an enigmatic quality just as mysterious as the reclusive woman herself. News-Press storyteller Amy Bennett Williams tells us in this week’s essay that, she managed to live out her life in relative solitude on the subtropical island...with a little help from an impressive roster of friends and admirers.
