New Research Challenges Long-Held Notions about Sea Turtle Movement

In the midst of Southwest Florida’s sea turtle nesting season, new research findings about the movement of nesting loggerhead turtles by the U.S. Geological Survey challenge some long-held ideas about their behavior.  We’ll explore how the new data could influence future protection efforts for this threatened species and what it could indicate about the actual size of the loggerhead’s Gulf of Mexico subpopulation.

We’ll also take a look at an ongoing research effort conducted by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in conjunction with Mote Marine Laboratory tracking the movement of Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles and what it might suggest about how they cope with blooms of the toxic red tide algae.
