Push for Medical Marijuana

The Florida Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on marijuana legalization. Those pushing to legalize the drug are working to get enough signatures to put the issue on the 2014 ballot.

In December, the state’s high court will hear arguments about whether a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana should go before Florida voters. A recent Gallup poll found 58 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana. The spokesman for the effort is Central Florida attorney John Morgan - chair of People United for Medical Marijuana.

"We’re collecting signatures every day at a record pace", said Morgan. "We have volunteers who have volunteered at unitedforcare.org who are downloading signatures and going out and collecting them. I’ve never seen anything like it here in Florida. There is a movement afoot and people know that this is a mission of mercy."

Meanwhile State Attorney General Pam Bondi is challenging the medical marijuana push, filing a brief alleging the proposed amendment would allow unlimited use of the drug.
