A Southwest Florida police officer was one of four officers shot across the country in separate incidents Sunday. One fatal shooting occurred in Texas, two officers injured in Missouri are expected to survive, and an officer was treated and released in Florida. The Sunshine State case is the first ever recorded police shooting on Sanibel Island.

Sanibel City police officer Jarred Ciccone was writing a ticket in his car Sunday night along Periwinkle Way when he was shot by a passing motorist.

The suspect, 49-year-old Jon Webster Hay, ran on foot. Officers later found him in his Sanibel home where they exchanged gunfire and ultimately arrested him.

Local media report Webster Hay has a history with Sanibel police. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is taking over the case.

Sanibel City Manager Judie Zimomra said in an email that this is the first recorded officer shooting on the small Southwest Florida island.
