Florida senators took up the House’s spending plan Thursday to hash out a number of proposed tax cuts.

The state Legislature appears poised to trim taxes for things like cell phone and cable services as part of a larger tax cut package.  But lawmakers are cutting it a lot less than they originally planned.

Instead of a 3.6 percent cut, legislators will settle for about half of that.  But Sen. Dorothy Hukill (R- Port Orange) says the spending plan is a good one.

“I feel very happy that we as senators will support tax relief for Floridians—remember the number: $400 million in tax relief.  That’s a good thing,” Hukill says.

But it’s nowhere near the $673 million plan proposed by the governor or the $690 million plan passed out of the House.  Under those proposals, the tax break on communication services alone would’ve been greater than the entire package lawmakers are settling on now.
