A Southwest Florida company is trying to prepare children for jobs operating unmanned aircrafts, as the industry continues to grow. Soaring Sky out of Fort Myerscreated a drone education curriculum. And it wants to implement this training in schools around the country.
Soaring Sky got teachers and industry professionals together to produce an introductory course of unmanned aircrafts for kids ages 11 through 18.It covers subjects like drone history, programing and safety. Company co-founder Ryan Cowell said the goal is to make kids qualified for piloting or even engineering drones.
“We're really looking for smart, intelligent and educated students that are coming out of the classroom and into the work force and we wana be a part of that somehow," said Cowell. "And so this kit really helps us make sure that they’re being trained and taught the proper material.”
He said so far, a school in California purchased the course. And Cowell said he’s in talks with schools across Florida that could implement this education curriculum by the next school year. The company plans to increase the material, ultimately leading kids as young as 16 to get their commercial drone operating licenses.
