The 2018 Governor’s race could lead to Florida’s Senate Budget Chairman and House Speaker squaring off against each other in the primary. But, for now, Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran says he does not think the campaign trail will affect the legislature’s handling of the upcoming year’s budget.

“We’re going to do what we do every single year and that’s: we’re going to go through that budget,” said Corcoran, speaking recently to reporters. “We’re going to make sure that every penny to the extent possible is spent wisely. And, to the extent it’s not, we’re going to make those cuts and we’re going to try and create a budget that allows school children to get a world class education, put more money in people’s pockets, and create an opportunity for people to go out there and great jobs and we won’t let any of the side distractions bother us in any way shape or form.”

Corcoran is rumored to be considering a gubernatorial bid. Clearwater Republican Senator Jack Latvala—who leads the Senate Appropriations Committee—has already declared his candidacy.
