Wrongfully Incarcerated Author to Speak at Naples Press Club

Topher Forhecz/WGCU

A Fort Myers man whose imprisonment and later exoneration made headlines is speaking to the Naples Press Club on Friday.

The case that would send Ryan Ferguson to prison for about 10 years began with a murder in Columbia, Mo. in 2001. Ferguson became ensnared in the investigation because of someone’s dream.

He was convicted of murder in 2005.

On the night of the murder, he and a friend at the time named Charles Erickson were at a bar. Ferguson drove Erickson home.

About two years later, Erickson said he had dreamt he was involved with the murder. He told others about the dream. The story made its way to the police. That led to Ferguson.

What would unfold was a long path for Ferguson, one filled with recanted testimonies, accusations of coercion and finally, Ryan Ferguson’s release from prison in late 2013.

Now, he’s a published author. His new book “Stronger, Faster, Smarter: A Guide to Your Most Powerful Body” focuses on healthy living and exercise, and how that can improve a person’s life.

Ryan Ferguson spoke with WGCU while sitting on his back porch in Fort Myers about his book and his take on the nation's legal system.

Ryan Ferguson will speak to the Naples Press Club at 11:30 Friday, Feb. 27 at the Hilton Naples. To find tickets go to Eventbrite.com, and search "Naples Press Club."
