The ACLU of Florida has wrapped up a months-long investigation into how the state handled last year’s toxic algal blooms; the result of discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers. The nonprofit civil liberties organization alleges the state failed its residents in how it responded to those discharges.

Calling Florida's criminal justice system "broken," and pointing to high rates of re-incarceration and growing costs to keep inmates in prison, the Florida ACLU and Lee County NAACP  are sponsoring a public forum Thursday night in Fort Myers to discuss reform.

Theaters in South Florida, and across the United States, Canada, and Europe, are screening the film adaption of George Orwell's dystopian classic 1984 on Tuesday, Apr. 4.   The Florida House passed a bill Wednesday that would fine local governments and law enforcement agencies that do not fully comply with federal immigration authorities.  However a recent report from the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida finds that at least 30 counties in the state do limit their compliance with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, to prevent themselves from violating peoples’ constitutional rights.
