Many Americans watched in shock as the Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated over the Florida sky 30 years ago.

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, D-FL, was one of the viewers who had tuned in to the national broadcast. Then a U.S. representative, Nelson arrived back to earth only 10 days earlier after a six-day mission in space. 

It would be the final successful mission to space before the Challenger disaster.

University of Florida researchers think they’ve found a way to cure trees infected with citrus greening. 

The treatment comes in three steps: first, a laser cuts small lines into the leaves of an infected tree, next an antibiotic is sprayed over the leaves, and then the leaves are covered in wax protect them from further damage. 

University of South Florida researchers presented their final report on the Robert G. Dozier School for Boys to the state cabinet Thursday, and even though this closes one chapter in a lengthy saga, a number of loose ends remain.

Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson wants federal investigators to take another dive into the Atlantic to locate the data recorder for sunken cargo ship El Faro.

Nelson says the recorder could go a long way toward piecing together why the ship sailed directly into a powerful hurricane three months ago.
