Justices Toss Out Death Sentence In Carlie Brucia Murder

A divided Florida Supreme Court on Thursday ordered resentencing for a Death Row inmate who was convicted in the 2004 sexual assault and murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia --- a Sarasota County case that drew national attention.

Faith leaders from across Pinellas and Pasco counties are urging State Attorney Bernie McCabe to stop seeking the death penalty in murder cases.

Among the 46 pastors and priests who signed a letter to McCabe were Bishop Gregory Parkes from the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg and Reverend Russell Meyer, the director of the Florida Council of Churches.

The former student charged with killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month will face the death penalty, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Already, the Florida Supreme Court has rejected more than three dozen appeals involving death row inmates, who received their sentences before 2002 and did not require unanimous juries. A panel of Florida lawmakers is now trying again to make a fix to that part of the state’s death penalty process.
