Elections

The mood of voters is one of the most important political factors in an election year.  In collaboration with the National NPR network and talk show programs on member stations around the country, we’ll explore what’s at the core of voter anxieties this election season.  The shrinking middle class and economic uncertainty is one factor.  A recent Pew Research Center analysis of government data finds that the country’s middle class is losing ground.  The report finds that while middle class wage earners accounted for 43% of aggregate U.S. income in 2014, down from 62% in 1970.

A federal judge heard arguments Wednesday in a case that could affect whether prisoners are counted in drawing voting districts in Florida, an issue that affects voting power particularly in rural areas of the state.

The Florida Department of State says a plan to let people register online to vote is on track. Officials passed the first hurdle last week, delivering a status report to the state legislature. Meredith Beatrice is a spokeswoman for the department.

Hundreds of thousands of registered voters in Florida are being asked to update their signatures.

If the signature on an absentee ballot doesn’t match what the elections office has on file, the vote can be tossed out.

Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Penelope Townsley sent letters to nearly 200,000 voters who have previously requested ballots by mail.

Steve Bousquet in the Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau says absentee voting has become so popular that an effort is underway to re-name it.

Hillsborough May Soon See New Voting Machines

Oct 20, 2015

It's been fifteen years since Florida's voting machines sent a presidential election into turmoil. And it's been seven years since Hillsborough County got new voting equipment.

On Wednesday, Hillsborough County Commissioners will be asked to buy new voting equipment for 2016 - a year earlier than planned in the county's two year budget. The new equipment may make the voting process easier and more reliable.
