Scott Activates Emergency Response

As Tropical Storm Isaac pushes to the Northwest, apprehension is growing in the Tampa Bay region, which happens to be hosting about 50 thousand people for the Republican National Convention.

Today Governor Scott activated the Florida Division of Emergency Management in anticipation of Tropical Storm Isaac.

"Put aside the RNC Convention for a moment. Florida has a lot of experience dealing with hurricanes. We're gonna be prepared for Isaac in the event it does impact our state and in the event it does become a hurricane."

Tropical storm Isaac is churning in the Atlantic.

And weather forecasters have all of South Florida falling within the storm's cone of uncertainty.

That includes Tampa and the Republican National Convention which begins Monday - the same day Isaac may make landfall as a category 1 hurricane or strong tropical storm.

Governor Rick Scott joked with reporters at a media briefing on the storm this morning about what might be affected at the RNC.

Officials Visit Scott to Ask for Extended Early Voting

A group of elected and civil rights leaders showed up unexpectedly in Governor Rick Scott's office Monday. 

Across Florida, college freshmen are signing up for classes. Many are taking advantage of the Bright Futures scholarship to help pay their way.

And many are experiencing sticker shock when they see what the scholarships DON’T cover. 

Students earn Bright Futures Scholarships based on their grades, test scores, and community service -- and NOT their financial need.

More than a third of Florida’s high school graduates qualified for the scholarship last year.

Forrest Estep was one of them. He's a student at Florida State.
