Supporters of an amendment to ban greyhound racing in Florida launched their campaign Monday at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, with several grassroots speakers and Republican Senator Dana Young.

Some greyhound owners and racers are asking state regulators to reconsider a highly unusual decision to decouple slot machines from dog racing.

The House Tourism & Gaming Control Subcommittee on Wednesday unanimously approved a measure that would ban injecting racing greyhounds with steroids.

Once posh destinations drawing A-list socialites, celebrities and gangsters, Florida's dog and horse tracks are now at the center of a dispute over whether they should be allowed to do away with live racing altogether.

A new law makes it riskier to drug racing animals. But greyhound advocates are complaining that the Legislature failed to pass meaningful protections.
