Bill Seeks To Add Police To Hate Crime Law

Hate-crime protections would be extended to law-enforcement officers and other first responders under a measure reintroduced Monday by Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah.

Media reports of increased incidents of hate crime have heightened awareness of the issue across the country, but in the case of one Naples man, personal experience spurred him to action.

Fire officials say a fire that damaged a Tampa area mosque was arson.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said in a news release the blaze occurred early Friday at the Islamic Society of New Tampa.


Three people were killed in 2015 because of what they looked like. In November 2016, signs saying “whites only” and “colored” were taped on the wall above water fountains at a Jacksonville high school.
