Lawsuit

Anthony Borges, the student who was shot five times as he shielded classmates from a gunman at his high school, on Tuesday became the first victim of the Parkland massacre to file a lawsuit.

In a complaint filed in Broward Circuit Court, Borges' family lists seven defendants, including gunman Nikolas Cruz and three mental health centers that treated Cruz before he killed 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas on Feb. 14.

Eight Florida kids are suing the state and Gov. Rick Scott over climate change.

They say it's not just inaction. The lawsuit states Florida officials have pursued policies that worsen the threat from greenhouse gas emissions, and violate Floridians' constitutional rights to health, prosperity and happiness.

Cities, Counties Take Aim At State Gun Law

Apr 13, 2018

Less than two months after a 19-year-old gunman shot dead 14 students and three faculty members at a Broward County high school, city and county officials in parts of Florida are pushing back against a state firearm law they say has created a chilling effect on their ability to respond to constituents’ demands.

The Pro gun rights group Florida Carry is threatening to sue Leon County after it passed a gun related ordinance. The ordinance imposes a waiting period and background checks for private gun sales. A 2011 preemption law prevents counties from regulating guns, but a 1998 constitutional amendment allows counties to enact background checks and waiting periods. Program Director for Florida State University’s Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, Mark Schlakman says the constitution should prevail.

Florida could soon be filing its own opioid abuse lawsuit against drug manufacturers. They’d be joining a long list of states, counties, and cities that have done the same.
