Florida Department of Health officials took two major actions in the medical-marijuana sphere Friday, issuing a highly sought-after license to a Miami nursery that successfully challenged the state and laying out the process for four more licenses as the cannabis industry continues to blossom.

Medical Marijuana Patient Number Tops 100,000

Florida’s medical-marijuana patient database has hit the 100,000 mark, according to a weekly update issued by the state Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use.

Florida’s Medicinal Marijuana industry has had a newsworthy week with lawsuits, court cases, and administrative complaints. To cap off this eventful week, the Department of Health held another Marijuana workshop on Friday, which focused on packaging, labeling, and waste management.

He led the Florida Seminole Tribe when it challenged the U.S. Supreme Court over gaming on tribal lands. The legal victory helped kick start a gambling industry now estimated at more than $33 billion. Now former Seminole Chief James Billie wants to do for marijuana what the tribes achieved for gaming, aiming to make tribal producers the source for marijuana in a growing number of states that have legalized recreational and medical use of the drug.

The sale of medical marijuana is banned in all of Charlotte County. After county commissioners voted to do so Tuesday, the Punta Gorda City Council voted today to follow suit. But council members agreed the city’s ban would only last a year at most. And then they’d revisit the subject.

The discussion was low key, and it ended with Mayor Rachel Keesling calling for the vote, which was unanimous.
