SWFL Student Activists Meet the MSD Peers Who Inspired Them

Student activists were able to meet the peers who inspire them Tuesday at a Road to Change tour stop in Punta Gorda. Student survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting embarked on a statewide bus tour from Parkland last week to encourage young people to vote. 

16-year-old Lianna Hubbard was at the group's voter registration event Tuesday afternoon.

We’re taking the show on the road to Punta Gorda in Charlotte County in order to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We’re at the The Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture of Charlotte County, which is a site along the Florida Black Heritage Trail

Utility company Florida Power & Light unveiled a new component to their solar field in Punta Gorda  for members of the media Friday . FPL is saying it’s one of the biggest of its kind in the country.

The sale of medical marijuana is banned in all of Charlotte County. After county commissioners voted to do so Tuesday, the Punta Gorda City Council voted today to follow suit. But council members agreed the city’s ban would only last a year at most. And then they’d revisit the subject.

The discussion was low key, and it ended with Mayor Rachel Keesling calling for the vote, which was unanimous.

Punta Gorda City Manager Howard Kunik is waiting for the results of an internal affairs report before he decides whether suspended Police Chief Tom Lewis keeps or loses his job. Lewis was acquitted of culpable negligence the last week of June in the death of 73-year-old Mary Knowlton during a shoot/don’t shoot demonstration at police headquarters last August.
