Schools

Eight of South Florida’s most struggling schools will get a multi-million dollar boost over the next two years to offer social services like mental health care.

The state Board of Education on Wednesday awarded an extra $2,000 per student to 11 schools statewide, including five in Miami-Dade County and three in Palm Beach County. The awards are for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.

South Florida has the highest concentration of segregated public schools in the state, according to a new study out Wednesday.

A new legislative proposal could require Florida schools to distribute free or reduce-price meal applications to all students, not just those in need. The bill applies to schools in the national school lunch program or the breakfast program.

The School District of Lee County

Lee County schools have been out of session since a little before Hurricane Irma and they're not set to return until September 25th.

Lee County School District Superintendent Gregory Adkins said this date is later than the school district intended.

"The recovery process is taking quite longer than we thought it would," said Adkins at a press conference. "And we found that most of our buildings did sustain damage."

The Pinellas County School Board is expected to vote Tuesday on whether or not to join a legal challenge to a controversial new education law.
