The need to be in constant communication can have tragic consequences if you're driving. An epidemic of crashes caused by distracted drivers is behind a new campaign to change people's behavior behind the wheel.

It's not just texting while driving. It's talking on a cell phone or even "heads-up" displays in new cars, that project information onto the windshield. Nationwide, more than 3,000 people were killed last year alone by distracted drivers.

License Plate Redesign on Hold

A proposal that would change the design and distribution of Florida license plates is on hold for at least another month. County tax collectors have come out against the plan to have private vendors issue the new plates.

Leon County Tax Collector Doris Maloy says outsourcing the work would hurt customer service.

The interstate has reopened. The Florida Highway Patrol reports there are twelve separate investigations.  Fifty-two patients were injured in the crash involving 47 vehicles. (22 Transported to Sarasota Hospital – 10 Transported to Manatee Hospital) Two were transported via Bayflite with non-Life threatening injuries.

Several cars using different kinds of fuels were on display at USF's Tampa campus during a stop on the Florida Alternative Vehicle Roadshow.

The two basic models for electric cars are ones that run strictly on batteries - like the Nissan Leaf - and the Chevy Volt, which has a gasoline motor that kicks in when the battery runs out.

FGCU Bringing Car Sharing to Campus

Car sharing is coming to Florida Gulf Coast University. The school has partnered with WeCar by Enterprise – the car rental agency -- to offer two cars to be rented by the hour or day beginning next month.
