A federal judge is ordering the state of Florida to give voters a chance to make sure their vote-by-mail ballots are counted.

Republicans have long dominated vote-by-mail in the Sunshine State.

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida ordered Secretary of State Ken Detzner to extend the new voter registration deadline to Wednesday October 12, 2016 at 5 p.m. 

The official deadline for new voter registration was Tuesday October 11th.

The Florida Democratic Party had sued Detzner and governor Rick Scott after their petition to extend the deadline due to difficulties caused by hurricane Matthew was denied.

Gov. Rick Scott rejected a call from Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign to extend the state's voter registration deadline as Florida officials turn their attention to the pending impact of Hurricane Matthew.
