Tax ‘Holiday’ To Trim Cost Of Stocking Up For Storms

With a sales-tax “holiday” starting next week, retailers are expecting big spending on disaster-preparedness supplies by Floridians who have fresh memories of Hurricane Irma.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is now forecast to strengthen and take a track a little closer to Florida's west coast. This has prompted the National Hurricane Center to issue a Tropical Storm Watch for much of the Greater Tampa Bay Area. A Storm Surge Watch has also been issued for sections of the Nature Coast north of Crystal River.

There is now a 90 percent chance a tropical storm will form in the Gulf of Mexico by Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Scott Calls For Preparations As Storm Looms

Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday directed the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to put high-water vehicles in position to respond as the National Hurricane Season monitored a large area of showers that extended from the northwestern Caribbean across Cuba and into the Florida peninsula.

One thing would-be homeowners in Florida have to worry about is if their potential property might be affected by flooding in a hurricane. Now, a pair of USF graduate students have created a database that helps tell people if that might be the case.
