Unceasing rain on Sunday — especially in parts of Broward where more than a foot of rain fell — flooded roads, stalled cars and even cut off power across South Florida.

And it's not over yet.

"I know everyone is tired of dealing with the rain, but its going to stick around a little longer," said Barry Baxter, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

As the start of hurricane season nears, National Hurricane Center director Ken Graham wants South Florida residents to make a plan now. On Sundial, the former journalist discusses the science of forecasting, how he communicates impacts and the importance of working across industries when it comes to hurricane preparedness.

He recently spoke at the 32nd Annual Governor's Hurricane Conference in West Palm Beach. The conference is held before the start of each hurricane season and offers sessions on hurricane preparedness and communication.

Hurricane season doesn't officially start until June 1, but the National Hurricane Center is already eying a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico.

On Sunday, the hurricane center flagged an area of showers and thunderstorms stretching from Cuba to the Southeastern Gulf.

The disturbance was given less than a 40 percent chance of developing into a named storm, according to a tropical outlook memo.

Springtime in North Florida means blooming flowers, trips to the beach and more active black bears. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are encouraging residents to take precautions as bears come out of hibernation. To keep bears out of neighborhoods, Dave Telesco, who directs the FWC’s Bear Management Program recommends ensuring bears can’t get into the garbage.

The number of sinkholes in Florida has surged since Hurricane Irma.

Some 400 sinkholes have been reported statewide since Hurricane Irma hit in September.

Anthony Randazzo of the engineering and geology firm Geohazards says water flowing underground during such heavy rain events brings with it clay and sand.

“Once you begin to do this you promote a lack of support for the ground surface to be able to hold or support a structure,” said Randazzo.
