Florida transportation officials are alerting residents emails asking for traffic violation payments are a scam.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says a company is sending out emails demanding payment of fraudulent traffic tickets. The emails threaten late penalties if recipients don’t pay.

Officials caution residents not to respond or make a payment because the company is not affiliated with the agency.

Residents can direct suspicious-looking emails to their local court clerk or the state’s motor vehicle department.
