Teachers unions across Florida are applauding an increase in state education funding.

President of the Leon County Teachers Association Scott Mazer says he hopes some of the money will go toward teacher salaries and benefits.

“When it comes to the budget our goal is to make sure that every student in this school system, Leon county schools, has a champion in the classroom, and the best way to do that is to recruit and retain the best quality staff,” he said.

Mazer says better pay can help teachers feel trusted and respected in the classroom, as well as keep up with the rising cost of healthcare. The state budget allocated  and additional $242 per student this year.
