A growing number of Democrats in Congress are calling for the impeachment of President Trump, following former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's testimony last week. But St. Petersburg Congressman Charlie Crist is taking a more cautious line.
According to a list compiled by NPR, 106 congressional Democrats support impeachment. They include Orlando Congresswoman Val Demings and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell of Miami. Both questioned Mueller during his congressional testimony on July 24.
Crist drew attention in April for questioning Attorney General William Barr about his four-page summary of the Mueller Report. But he has repeatedly said congressional committes should finish their investigations before deciding on impeachment. “I’m anxious to follow the Judiciary Committee's leadership and what they decided to do and if they're going to hear from Mr. McGahn in the near future, I think that would be helpful,” he said at an event in St. Petersburg Monday.
Crist is referring to former White House counsel Don McGahn, who was a key witness for Robert Mueller. McGahn has refused congressional subpoenas. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, has said he will likely go to court to force McGahn's testimony.
