Florida Schools Improve Marks For Achievement, Earn Low Marks For School Funding

Florida schools earn good marks for student achievement, according to Education Week's annual evaluation of state school systems.

Florida students are scoring higher on national exams, taking and passing more advanced courses and graduating at a higher rate. And the difference in scores between white and minority students on a national exam is shrinking.

All are reasons Florida ranked seventh for student achievement on Education Week's Quality Counts survey. Florida earned a C for achievement, up from a C minus last year. But the state earned a failing grade for what it spends on education.Florida ranked near the bottom for per pupil spending and education spending as a percentage of state resources. Education Week did not rank the states overall this year. Last year Florida ranked 6th nationally.
