Lee School District Opens Food Distribution Sites

The Lee County School District is starting to offer meal pick-up services for students while schools remain closed during the COVID-19 outbreak.  The school system’s “Grab & Go” meal distribution plan is providing free meals to kids 18 and under who typically rely on schools to provide breakfast and lunch.

Meal distribution takes place weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at designated schools and other community locations throughout Lee County.

State Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Naples, copied news outlets in an e-mail to Lee School District Superintendent Greg Adkins criticizing the process having parents bring their kids to the food distribution locations in order to receive meals.  Rep. Donalds said he’s concerned the requirement that the kids be at the site undermines isolation efforts people are already taking to help reduce spread of the coronavirus.

However, rules for such meal distribution programs are dictated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Food distribution sites located at schools are using bus ramps to allow families who show up to stay in their vehicles and keep lines moving smoothly.
