Under Florida law, firearm possession is prohibited on school and university campuses. But the state's 12 public universities might no longer have a say in how to keep their campuses gun-free.
Florida's first District Court of appeal on Tuesday ruled that state universities cannot enact regulations regarding guns on campus. At issue were the rights of a University of North Florida student who challenged a university rule banning students on campus from storing guns in their cars.
Under Florida law, school districts can adopt their own policies regarding the storage of guns in vehicles. UNF argued that the university should count as a school district. The court disagreed and ruled in the student's favor.
A spokeswoman for UNF said that the university was reviewing the case and had not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling.
