The Mood is Festive at Candidate Francis Rooney's Campaign Party

Topher Forhecz

Southwest Florida will pick a Republican candidate for Congress today during the primary. Among the contenders is businessman Chauncey Goss, former secret service member Dan Bongino, and former Ambassador Francis Rooney.

Rooney’s party is being held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point. It’s in a large ballroom with glowing blue and red tables, and long white couches.

The vibe at Rooney’s party is celebratory, with jazz playing and some occasional dancing. The size of the party matches Rooney’s campaign efforts.

He vastly outspent his opponents – dumping more than 3 million dollars of his own money into his Congressional bid.

Rooney is a former ambassador to the Holy See and a businessman.

He’s campaigning on ending polluted discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee River.

He’s also calling for a stronger vetting process for Syrian refugees and building a wall along the US Mexican border.

The winner faces little-known Democrat Robert Neeld of Cape Coral in the November general election.
