First Hot Car Death of 2014 in FL Reported in Sarasota

Sarasota police say a two-year-old girl died Sunday after being left in a hot car. It's the first vehicle heatstroke death in Florida this year.

Police say the child's father - 23-year-old Uriel Hernandez - unintentionally left her in the car when he went inside his home to get his phone charger. Instead, authorities say he fell asleep and didn't come back out until hours later. He found the child unresponsive.

Authorities say the two-year-old had a body temperature of 106 degrees when she was taken to the hospital.Janette Fennell, the founder of Kids and Cars DOT org, says this case brings the total number of vehicle heatstroke deaths across the country to nine.

"I don't know if he was thinking the baby was asleep in the car and everything was going to be ok, but it's just another reason that we should never leave children alone in vehicles even if you're going inside just to get a phone charger", Fennell warned. "They should be with you at all times."

Sarasota Police have charged Hernandez with felony aggravated manslaughter in this case.
