Blaise Gainey is a Multimedia Reporter for WFSU News. Blaise hails from Windermere, Florida. He graduated from The School of Journalism at the Florida A&M University. He formerly worked for The Florida Channel, WTXL-TV, and before graduating interned with WFSU News. He is excited to return to the newsroom. In his spare time he enjoys watching sports, Netflix, outdoor activities and anything involving his daughter.

  • State health officials reported 2,974 new cases of COVID-19, Sunday, pushing Florida over the 600,000-case threshold, with 600,571 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.The Florida Department of Health also reported 51 new coronavirus-related deaths, Sunday, bringing the statewide death toll to 10,462 fatalities.On Saturday, state health officials reported 4,300 new cases and 106 deaths.
  • A week after Wakulla County Schools reopened the local health Department says positive coronavirus tests have been reported.
  • State health officials reported 3,779 new cases of COVID-19, Sunday, increasing the statewide total to 573,416 cases. Aug. 16 marked the lowest single-day increase in cases of the virus so far this month, and marked the first time in August, health officials have reported fewer than 4,000 new cases in a day.The Florida Department of Health also reported 107 new coronavirus-related deaths, yesterday, bringing the statewide death toll to 9,452 fatalities.
  • State health officials reported 6,236 new COVID-19 cases, Thursday, increasing the statewide total to 557,137 cases. Aug. 13 marked the 18th consecutive day the state has reported fewer than 10,000 new cases of the virus in a day.The Florida Department of Health also reported 148 new coronavirus-related deaths, Thursday, bringing the statewide death toll to 8,913 fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic.

  • State Health officials reported 5,409 new cases of COVID-19, Wednesday, bringing Florida's caseload over the 500,000-case threshold with 502,739 documented positive cases of the virus.Florida is the second state in the U.S. to report more than 500,000 cases, behind only California.Testing in Florida has been ramping back up after a temporary shutdown of some state-run testing sites because of Tropical Storm Isaias.The Florida Department of Health reported 225 new coronavirus-related deaths, Aug. 5, increasing the statewide death toll to 7,627 fatalities.
  • State health officials reported 4,752 new cases of COVID-19, Monday bringing the statewide total to 491,884 cases.Monday's reported new cases of the virus mark the lowest single-day increase since June 26, when the Florida Department of Health reported 3,366 new cases. June 26 was also the same day Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered bars to close for a second time since the beginning of the pandemic.Monday also marked the ninth consecutive day the state has reported fewer than 10,000 new cases of the virus in a single day.
  • State health officials reported 186 new coronavirus-related deaths, Tuesday, setting a new record high for the number of deaths reported in a single day.Yesterday's deaths bring Florida's statewide death toll from the virus to 6,117 fatalities.2,760 deaths, or 45% of Florida's total COVID fatalities have been among staff and residents of long-term care facilities. Even so, Gov. Ron DeSantis says he's considering a possible relaxation of the state's ban on visitation to long-term care facilities like nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
