Susan Giles Wantuck

Susan Giles Wantuck is our midday news host, and a producer and reporter for WUSF Public Media who focuses her storytelling on arts, culture and history.

She also serves as a music host on Florida's Classical Music Station, WSMR 89.1, 103.9 and at wsmr.org.

She is a lifelong resident with deep roots in Florida. She collects recipes and enjoys writing.  

Susan is a graduate of the University of South Florida, where she studied Mass Communication.  The Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Association and the Society of Professional Journalists have honored her hosting and reporting work.

  • State health officials reported 7,788 new COVID-19 cases, Sunday and 119 new deaths. Florida launched a new state-run website, Friday, for people to register for COVID-19 vaccination appointments at myvaccine.fl.gov. It remains unclear how Florida residents under 65 years old who are deemed “extremely vulnerable” can sign up to receive a vaccine dose. The more contagious COVID-19 variant called B.1.1.7 continues to spread in Florida. The CDC reports, Florida now leads the nation with 147 cases of the variant identified so far. After giving Publix exclusive vaccine rights in Palm Beach County, the state is now planning to open a vaccine clinic in Belle Glade to serve the predominantly Black agricultural towns that surround Lake Okeechobee and that are more than 25 miles away from the nearest Publix location. A USF survey focused on misinformation, social media, and the politicization of the pandemic explores varying degrees of trust people have in information they’re getting about the coronavirus through social media platforms.
  • Thursday marked another grim new milestone with the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida with state health officials reporting a single day record high of 173 deaths, increasing the statewide death toll to 5,518 fatalities.The Florida Department of Health also reported 10,249 new cases of the virus, yesterday, for a total of 389,868 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

July 7 marked the 14th consecutive day of single-day increases of at least 5,000 cases.The Florida Department of Health also reported 63 new coronavirus-related deaths, Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 3,841 fatalities.Since Phase Two of Florida's reopening plan went into effect June 5th, state health officials have reported a more than 70 percent increase in new cases of the virus.

  • State health officials reported 617 new cases of COVID-19, Tuesday, bringing the statewide total number of confirmed cases to 57,447.The Florida Department of Health also reported 70 new coronavirus-related deaths, June 2, for a statewide death toll of 2,530 fatalities. Tuesday’s reported deaths mark the highest single-day increase in fatalities since May 5.In total, Florida has had 10,412 patient hospitalizations due to the virus.
