The Seagrasses of Charlotte Harbor

Southwest Florida’s waters were toxicback in 2018, with a cyanobacteria bloom choking Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee River and its estuary, all while a red tide persisted off the coast for more than a year. This set into motion an effort to address the water quality issues that have long been debated here in Florida, including the passage of Senate Bill 712, also known as the “Clean Waterways Act” earlier this year.

The long term effects of that new law are yet to be known, but on Monday and Tuesday, June 1-2 a group of scientists and researchers and policy advocates – the people who will be studying those long term effects – will share their latest research findings with each other and the general public...all via Zoom.

We get a preview with Jennifer Hecker, Executive Director of the CHNEP; Marisa Carrozzo, Senior Environmental Policy Specialist at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida; and Betty Staugler, Extension Agent with University of Florida’s Sea Grantprogram.
