Charlotte County is celebrating its centennial on Friday. It was created on April 23rd, 1921, when Governor Cary A. Hardee signed a bill passed by the Florida Legislature that divided DeSoto County into five counties: Charlotte, Hardee, Highlands, Glades and DeSoto.
As the county prepares to celebrate we’re joined by publisher and historian, James Abraham, to talk about his new book “Century: A People’s History of Charlotte County” that expands upon existing historical accounts by providing a narrative and historical overview of some of the lesser known people and moments that shaped the county’s history since its founding.
Abraham did deep historical research, and spoke with everyday people to get their personal stories, to provide personal context about how Charlotte County became what it is today. He is a writer, teacher, owner of Book-Broker Publishers of Florida, and a retired journalist.
