Floridians have approved Amendment 13 – meaning gambling on live greyhound racing will be phased out by 2020. That could leave many dogs looking for new homes.

Florida State Director for The Humane Society Kate MacFall says thousands of dogs will need homes within the next 26 months.

“We know that when this has passed in other states, the adoption groups have stepped up. We already know they’re mobilizing, ready to absorb the dogs and we are looking forward to assisting in whatever way possible. And we always encourage pet adoption, but certainly now is a wonderful time to adopt a greyhound.”

Greyhound racing has been declared illegal in 40 other states.
