Mandatory curfews are in place across three counties in Southwest Florida: in Collier and Charlotte Counties between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and Lee County between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Officials say the curfews are effective immediately and will remain in effect until further notice. In Hendry County, a more limited countywide curfew is in effect from Sunday, Sep. 10 through 7 a.m. Monday, Sep. 11.

Officials in all counties said in emailed statements the purpose of the curfew is meant to protect the safety of residents and their property as Hurricane Irma moves through, and as emergency responders in the area begin recovery efforts.

Exempt from the the curfew does not apply to emergency responders, health care employees in area facilities, and essential staff at organizations providing relief services or those seeking medical assistance.
