According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 11 to 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. About 68,000 veterans live in Lee County alone and that number is expected to increase in the coming years as more soldiers return home. Problems with access to mental health care through VA facilities have been garnering national attention in recent months. As June 27 marks National PTSD Awareness Day, we’ll explore symptoms and treatment options for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and access to mental health care for returning veterans.
