Researchers Develop Simple 'Open Source' Ventilator

simulation.health.ufl.edu

As the need for ventilators continues to grow around the world, manufacturers are ramping up production and some industries are shifting to ventilator production. But, there are also out-of-the-box approaches being worked on. A team of researchers around the world have developed a basic ventilator design that can be built using parts from the hardware store. It’s called the Open Source Ventilator Project.

That means it’s an open collaboration that anyone can contribute to, and anyone can use the designs for free. The team is starting the process this week to get an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA for these ventilators to be used during the coronavirus pandemic. We're joined by the project's leader, University of Florida Professor of Anesthesiology, Dr. Samsun Lampotang.
