Voting Rights Group Wants More Access to Early Voting

Florida finally finished counting its ballots for president on Saturday, but voting-rights advocates say their struggle is just beginning. A coalition of unions and advocacy groups Monday announced a push for reforms to the state's voting system.

They blamed the Republican-controlled Legislature and Governor Rick Scott for cutting access to the polls – especially for minority voters.

Many Floridians waited for hours to vote, and many were not able to do so.

Democratic state Senator Oscar Braynon of Miami Gardens said he had little hope the governor or Legislature would act - especially after Scott refused to extend early voting.

"For me, the governor putting together a task force is almost like the guy who stabbed you in the heart saying, ‘Now, let me perform open-heart surgery on you'”, Braynon said. “I think we ought to allow someone else to come in and help us to solve the problems I think they already caused and they knew they were causing."

Braynon said the coalition may file a complaint with the federal government. The group is calling for reinstatement of the longer early voting period and more early voting sites.
