Over time, listenership declined with the advances in digital accessibility and the shift newspapers made to online platforms. Requests for radio receivers are rare and our streaming numbers were down to a handful per year.
With careful consideration, we have decided not to reinstate live reading services. WGCU’s RRS will now broadcast the Talking Information Center 24/7 and provide radios as supplies last.
A big thank you to the dedicated volunteers who served.
The WGCU Radio Reading Service is a member-supported service of WGCU Public Media at Florida Gulf Coast University. The reading service brings printed materials to persons who are blind, physically impaired and print handicapped via a special radio broadcast. The Radio Reading Service operates much like a commercial radio station with standard professional equipment including a control room, broadcast studios and individual recording booths.
Dedicated volunteers produce hundreds of hours of programming each month broadcasting news, shopping ads and current information from a variety of print sources. Local newspapers include the Fort Myers News-Pressand the Naples Daily News. National publications include the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Time magazine with books, informational articles and magazines constituting the balance of the programming.
